For white limestone cliffs spotted with the deep green gnarled pine trees, try the southernmost tip of Salento or take a sail boat down to the stunning city of Otranto with its colourful and mixed past.

Visit the infamous start of the Appian Way in the harbour town of Brindisi leading all the way to Rome and stand in the spot where Spartacus was supposed to have been crucified.

Take a day trip to the absolutely stunning university town of Lecce, the Baroque masterpiece of southern Italy. Approx. an hour and a half drive away Lecce's history goes back a long way  and you still see ruins of a Roman theatre and amphitheatre - but the period which led to town's current fame was the 17th century. A period of prosperity led to grand developments and the construction of palaces and churches. These buildings adapted with extravagantly covering facades and doorways.

Nearby is the hilltop town of Martina Franca with its lovely historic centre, a memorable maze of winding alleys, where whitewashed simplicity sits side by side with baroque extravagance.

Ostuni is one of the most stunning cities in southern Italy famous for the dazzling effect of its whitewashed houses. You can enjoy fabulous shopping and gourmet restaurants at every turn as you explore the town. The city of Ostuni is a series of levels, staircases, small roads, alleys, arches. Hints of the Middle Ages are at hand in every corner, in every view to the sea, in the portal ofa palace, in the walls of a convent or the front of a church.

Spend the day wandering Alborabello - a unique and picturesque destination which is becoming an important fixture on the travel itineraries of tour operators as well as independent travellers. The small town has been made a UNESCO World Heritage site for its unusual districts of trulli, the characteristic white-washed conical-roofed houses of the area. The most picturesque parts of Alberobello are the two areas composed almost entirely of trulli; over a thousand of them. Here the little white pointy-topped dwellings are clustered together like a hobbit town.

Farther inland is the Murge, scorched highlands grooved by canyons where, in the Middle Ages, people built cave dwellings as homes and churches when they fled from pirates. The most famous dwellings of all are the Sassi in Matera. Below the modern town and built on the side of a steep ravine, two whole neighborhoods of single-room cave dwellings and rock-hewn, frescoed churches, these were inhabited first by hermits and then by families until the 1960s.

The brightness of its whitewashed houses, set against the pink-tinged brown of its principal monument, makes the town stand out in the green of the surrounding area. It is this happy combination that has made Ostuni one of the most attractive, buzzing cities in the region with great shopping, sophisticated restaurants and plazas and a true Italian lifestyle.
